A glass of Vinho Verde with your turkey helps aid digestion and eases the sensation of an ‘overwhelmed gut.’

Question: Have you ever whispered these words to yourself while sitting at the table during a Thanksgiving feast? “Oh my God, I think I am going to explode?”

If you have, then trust me when I say you are not alone. Millions of Americans will be uttering these words, almost in unison, very soon.

Next question: Have you ever tried to crisp, perfectly-chilled Vinho Verde wine with your turkey? Probably not. Here is why you should, though, give it a try this year.

Vinho Verde pairs well with roasted turkey because its crisp acidity, freshness, and light sparkle balance the richness of the meat, harmonizing with the herbs and side dishes.

Vinho Verde to the Rescue

Many Thanksgiving dishes are heavy in carbohydrates, such as mashed potatoes, stuffing, and rolls, as well as fats, including gravy, butter, and pie crust. These foods are high in calories and slow to digest, contributing to a feeling of heaviness and fullness. Eating lots of carbs in one sitting causes blood sugar to rise quickly, followed by a dip that can leave you feeling sluggish and “stuffed.” It’s a perfect storm for overwhelming your gut!

Known for its bright, high acidity, Vinho Verde offsets the richness of roasted turkey and the slightly fatty skin, which is usually covered in gravy. The acidity of the wine cuts through that richness, keeping your palate refreshed.

Vinho Verde is light in body, making it a good match for turkey. Heavier wines can overpower the delicate flavor of the turkey. The lemon, lime, and green apple flavors in Vinho Verde complement the subtle herbal seasoning (rosemary, thyme, sage) often used in roasting turkey. These flavors brighten the dish.

Many Vinho Verde wines have a gentle spritz. That light fizz adds a cleansing effect, lifting away the savory, sometimes salty flavors of turkey skin and gravy.

Finally, the slightly off-dry style of Vinho Verde can bridge sweet, tart, and savory flavors, making it very food-friendly for a Thanksgiving-style spread.

This Thanksgiving, give Lucky Sardine’s white or rosé Vinho Verde wines a try. I am positive you and your belly will be happy you did.
